Anton Warkentin - The Cupcake Philanthropist

Anton WarkentinWhat’s in a great cupcake? Sugar, butter, flour and occasionally, a large measure of philanthropy. Anton Warkentin isn’t much of a cupcake devotee. For him, the treats are a means to an end.

A few months ago, Anton learned that he was a recipient of the Santa Barbara Foundation Fleischmann Scholarship, which rewards good grades and community service with a cash award. The best part for Anton was this year’s addition to the award: a $500 gift to the charity of his choice. After careful deliberation, Anton decided to donate the money to Cupcakes for Cancer.

Anton had heard about eighth-grader Blakely Colvin’s struggles with disease and chemotherapy. She survived but when another student was diagnosed with leukemia, she established Cupcakes for Cancer and began making and selling cupcakes. Her initial goal of raising $1,000 was quickly reached and raised to $5,000. Anton was happy to add his award.

Anton is now a senior and an Eagle Scout. He is proud of the many hours that he’s spent coordinating the upgrade of his church’s kitchen. He hopes to enroll at Chapman University or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to begin work on a degree in Graphic Design.
