Katherine Harvey Fellows
The Foundation’s Katherine Harvey Fellows program provides a forum for young professionals to learn about the Foundation’s work in the nonprofit community, as well as grantmaking and fundraising. The program is named after a former Foundation trustee and investment committee member, Katherine Harvey, a well-known philanthropist and patron who died in 1962.
When the 2006-2007 Katherine Harvey Fellows completed their 18-month program, members were inspired to launch Youth Making Change (YMC), a way for teens to impact their community through philanthropy. The idea is to educate young people about significant needs that may exist next door or across town, learn about nonprofit organizations working to address those needs, and then award grants to the projects of their choice.
Working with the Fund for Santa Barbara, the Fellows are now reviewing applications from young people between the ages of 13-19 to join the YMC board. YMC will award $5,000 to projects that address community issues and challenges that affect youth in Southern Santa Barbara County. Participating teens will learn about proposal evaluation, grantmaking, working in a group, and general leadership skills. Each youth board member will receive a $300 stipend.
There’s more good news: Youth Making Change will expand to the Santa Maria Valley and Lompoc in the next school year.
