Some nonprofits can envision success in a decade or two; others expect to continue for generations. If you’re not activating the next generation of leaders, who will carry on? How are you adapting to demographic and social changes that make board recruitment – and board leadership – more challenging?
Nonprofits that are serious about their own sustainability should also be serious about planning for the smooth and thoughtful transition of their leadership. Whether this occurs due to intentional term limits, an unexpected vacancy, or the anticipated stepping-down of a long-tenured leader, being ready with a plan in place can help a nonprofit weather the inevitable storms of leadership transition.
